The Assistant City Engineer is responsible for assisting with the overall planning, direction, and operation of the Engineering Department, including the planning, design, and construction of public works projects. The Assistant City Engineer works with other city departments, outside agencies, and citizens regarding engineering, construction, and related activities; and performs related duties as required.
The Assistant City Engineer will serve as a backup to the City Engineer / Director of Public Works when needed.

Communication Specialists are responsible for receiving, interpreting, and processing calls for police and fire services. They must be able to determine if the request for service is an emergency or non-emergency according to established procedures and training; relay the information with speed and accuracy; and dispatch police and fire personnel through the use of radio, telephone, or other communications equipment on an assigned shift.
Requirements: minimum age of 18; possess high school diploma or GED equivalent; good moral character; pass pre-employment physical; including drug test; ability to pass a rigid background investigation; obtain state "Iowa/NCIC System" certification within 180 days of initial employment; must have knowledge of the general principals of computer system operation and ability to accurately and rapidly enter computer data. Communication Specialist Job Description
Salary Range - $107,134 - $139,290 depending upon qualifications.
The fourth level of the Planning & Zoning series directs the operations of community development plans, programs and services, which includes departments such as: Building and Code Enforcement and Planning Provides leadership and supervision to employees to develop and implement community policies and programs for the City of Ottumwa in compliance with Federal, State and local laws and regulations. Prepares and manages the departments’ and programs budgets. Presents and communicates reports to public boards, commissions and community partners. Plans and implements long-term community development goals and projects for programs such as Comprehensive Plan, Housing Study, Urban Revitalization and Renewal Plans, among others. Serves as a member of the City Administrator’s executive team.
Under the leadership of the City Administrator, this position exercises independent judgment and works with minimal supervision on the City of Ottumwa planning, zoning, building inspection, code enforcement, housing, economic development, and community arts functions. Prepares the City’s comprehensive development plans and land use ordinances. Responsibilities include the technical advice for development, building, land use, zoning codes, or other related areas for creation of policies. Responsible for technical review of subdivisions, site plans, and development plans including conditional approval process with developers and consultants. Might seek guidance from City Administrator, when needed.
Training / Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s degree with major coursework in Public Administration, Urban Planning, Land-Use planning, Economic Development, or , Political Science, or other closely related field, AND
Five (5) years progressive administrative experience in the field of community development, planning, economic development, or municipal government, with at least three (3) years of supervisory experience; OR
Valid Driver's License
A Master’s degree is preferred.
