From time to time, the City of Ottumwa has openings for a variety of positions, from part-time
seasonal employment to entry level positions to managerial opportunities.

All applications are filled out online through the City's human resources information system
(HRIS). Each job posting has it's own specific link to the application.

The City maintains employment applications as confidential records pursuant to Iowa Code section 22.7(18)

Assistant City Engineer

Salary Range - $73,176 - $95,135 depending upon qualifications

The Assistant City Engineer is responsible for assisting with the overall planning, direction, and operation of the Engineering Department, including the planning, design, and construction of public works projects. The Assistant City Engineer works with other city departments, outside agencies, and citizens regarding engineering, construction, and related activities; and performs related duties as required.

The Assistant City Engineer will serve as a backup to the City Engineer / Director of Public Works when needed.

Training / Education and Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major work in civil, construction, or sanitary engineering or related field.; AND
  • Has passed the Fundamentals of Engineering exam; AND
  • One (1) year of field exposure to active construction projects; OR
  • An equivalent combination of education/training and experiences which provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Has passed the Fundamentals of Engineering exam, and is on track to obtain a Professional Engineer’s license issued by the State of Iowa within 4 years

Skill / Abilities Requirements

  • Knowledge of basic technical engineering principle, practices, techniques and equipment;
  • Read and understand the terminology and symbols used in survey notes, plans, aerials photographs and topographic maps to interpret data and information for use in design;
  • Knowledge of hazards and safety requirements relative to the operations of the Engineering Department;
  • Knowledge of street, alley, and sewer records;
  • Knowledge of construction principles and practices;
  • Arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and trigonometry;  
  • Project management;
  • Problem solving;
  • Modern office procedures and equipment; 
  • Recordkeeping principles; 
  • Monitors a budget; 
  • Judgement and decision making;
  • Prioritizes and assigning work; 
  • Uses computers and related software applications; 
  • Maintains confidentiality; 
  • Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to give and receive work direction.

Firefighters work 24-hour shift, rotating between 3 different shifts.  

The City of Ottumwa Firefighters respond to local medical and fire calls and may offer assistance on HazMat calls. There is an extra monthly stipend for EMT certification along with HazMat certification.

Education / Certification Requirements:

  • High School graduate or equivalent
  • Valid Iowa Driver's License required
  • EMT certification preferred and required within the first year of appointment
  • Must reside within 30 mile radius of the Central Fire Station upon completion of probationary period

Seasonal - Admissions/Concessions

The Beach Ottumwa is looking for a friendly, customer service focused Admissions / Concessions staff person!

This is a part-time seasonal position working through our spring / summer season. Admissions / Concessions staff are responsible for:

  • Preparing food according to specific instructions to maintain the highest food quality 
  • Ensuring all sales are recorded and proper change is given
  • Keeping concession stand clean and orderly
  • Enforce all rules and regulations
  • Calculating admission fees, receives monies from patrons and provide change or validating passes and counts patrons for attendance information.
  • Perform various cleaning, maintenance and other duties around the facility (garbage removal, sweeping and mopping floors, cleaning bathrooms, etc.)

Minimum Requirements:

  • Must be 16 years of age or older
  • Certification in American Red Cross CPR - PR and Standard First Aid

Seasonal Lifeguard

The City of Ottumwa is accepting applications for a Lifeguard position

We have openings for seasonal lifeguards at The Beach Ottumwa. You will need excellent customer service and communication skills. The successful candidate will be hard-working, flexible and reliable. The position will require flexible schedule with ability to adjust to day, night, holidays, and weekend work.

Core Duties

  • Patrol or monitor all areas
  • Rescue distressed persons, using rescue techniques and equipment
  • Examine injured persons and administer first aid or cardiopulmonary resuscitation, if necessary, using training and medical supplies and equipment
  • Maintain quality of pool water by testing chemical levels
  • Provide safety precaution information as needed
  • Observe activities in assigned areas, to detect hazards, disturbances, or safety infractions
  • Employees will be required to possess and maintain throughout employment a current certification in American Red Cross Lifeguarding, Waterpark Lifeguarding, CPR-PR, and Standard First Aid.
