Demolition Requirements

Safe and efficient building demolition requires careful planning. Follow these steps to ensure it is being done properly.
  1. Call for utility locates, (800) 292-8989, and tell them you are demolishing the structure(s).
  2. Contact the utilities (telephone, gas, electric, water and cable TV) to have the services abandoned.
  3. Contract a licensed plumber to abandon the water service at the main unless the service is copper. If it is copper it may be abandoned at the stop box. Talk to the Water Company at (641) 684-4606.
  4. The sewer line must be capped within 3' of the property line and inspected by a building inspector. Call (641) 683-0650 for the inspection.
  5. All demolition material must be taken to the Ottumwa/Wapello County landfill. No burning. No exceptions.
  6. The foundation must be taken apart. It may be used as fill material at the site or at another site. It may NOT be "stored or stockpiled" at this or another location in the City.
  7. Level the site to the contour of the surrounding earth. Erosion control is the responsibility of the property owner. The site must have a minimum of 6" of humus soil and the area seeded with a normal grass seed mixture.
