There are health and safety requirements for operators of haunted house or fun house attractions in Ottumwa. Organizers must apply for a permit with the City Clerk at least 30 days before opening the attraction. Applicants are subject to a police background check and fire inspection prior to consideration by the Ottumwa City Council.
The fire inspection will consist of checking for the use of flame retardant materials, dual-sensor smoke detectors, fire extinguishers and lighted exit signs. All electrical installations must meet the electrical code. There are also requirements limiting the total number of occupants in the facility during operation.
