Patrons are now able to check out a limited number of mobile WiFi HotSpots at the Ottumwa Public Library in an effort to help cross the digital divide. These devices will work anywhere and will connect with a mobile-enabled device, such as a laptop, smartphone or tablet, to the Internet.
“We want to do our best to meet the needs in our community,” Ottumwa Public Library Director Sonja Ferrell said. “We have seen the stark contrast between those who have access to the internet and those who do not during our closure due to the COVID 19 virus. By circulating these HotSpots we will give access to those who do not ordinarily have it.”
Because of the expected high demand and the financial investment required to provide these devices there will be additional check out procedures and policies in place and a borrower agreement form will be required to be signed. The borrower must be 18 or older to borrow the HotSpots. There will be a one week check out period with an option of renewing up to two times. They must be returned in good condition. Fines, damages and lost fees will accrue on these devices. If not returned on time the device will be disconnected from service by the library.
“We hope that this allows for some members of the community who have been without consistent, efficient internet service to be able to utilize our new devices,” Ferrell said.
Interested borrowers should call the library to arrange for a check out of a device or to be put on a hold list for when the next one is available. Contact the Ottumwa Public Library at 641-682-7563
