Continuing from last two months, the City of Ottumwa continues to generate a new article about City operations and/or city departments. This is intended to inform citizens of operations and features of the City of Ottumwa and how they operate.

The Ottumwa Fire Department is a 32 member department that handles many type of emergencies including, fire, hazmat, emergency medical services, confined space and many others. All the officers attend the National Fire Academy at least once and most have attended twice.  Members have taught hazmat classes to seven of the nine counties that Ottumwa covers for hazmat emergencies.

Five members of the Ottumwa Fire Dept. are military veterans. Two members were voted the State of Iowa HazMat Tech of the year. As a regional hazmat response group the Canadian Pacific Railroad has partnered with Ottumwa’s Fire Dept. to respond to any train derailment emergency from Davenport, Iowa to Chillicothe, Missouri. Ottumwa’s Fire Dept. smoke alarm program is one of the best in the state by installing alarms on a weekly basis. Ottumwa’s Fire Dept. has received grant money approaching $300,000 in the last eighteen months. Ottumwa’s Fire Dept. is to have their very first citizens’ academy later on this year.
