Structure Fire at 220 West Fifth Street

The Ottumwa Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 220 West Fifth Street Sunday, November 24, 2024. Just before noon, a call came in and crews were there within minutes. Smoke and flames were coming out of the building on arrival. Dispatch was asked to call a second alarm for further assistance. The Interim Fire Chief and Interim Deputy Chief were also on scene. In June of 2024, this structure had a fire and has been tagged by Building and Code Enforcement since that incident. After the fire was out, the area was taped off and doors were secured to keep people from reentering. The Fire Department will be working with Building and Code Enforcement on a plan to address safety concerns until the structure can permanently be taken care of. No injuries were reported and the fire remains under investigation.
