The City of Ottumwa completed and adopted its Historic Preservation Plan in September 2024. The wideranging plan reviews the state of preservation activities today and includes reccomendations for improvements and activities in a variety of areas. The plan is an attempt to answer the question: how do want our history to look into the future?

The National Register of Historic Places is the official list of the Nation's historic places worthy of preservation. Authorized by the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, the National Park Service's National Register of Historic Places is part of a national program to coordinate and support public and private efforts to identify, evaluate, and protect America's historic and archeological resources.

The Ottumwa Preservationist, the newsletter for the Ottumwa Historic Preservation Commission is a vital resources for news and information about preservation activities.
The Commission has used Google Maps to create an interactive tour experience that allows citizens to take supplement their driving or walking visits to each Historic District.
Preservation Iowa has designated 9 properties across the state for the 2020 Most Endangered Properties List including the historic Daum House at 513 N Court in Ottumwa.
