Landfill
The Ottumwa/Wapello Landfill is operated by the Ottumwa / Wapello Solid Waste Commission; a joint body formed by 28E agreement between Wapello County and the City of Ottumwa.
The Landfill is open 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 7:00 a.m. to Noon on Saturday. It's closed for most State and Federal Holidays
Landfill Rules
- All loads must be tarped. There will be a $25 to $100 penalty assessed for residential vehicles which are untarped when entering the landfill. Commercial vehicles which are untarped will receive a penalty of $50 to $150 for each violation. View: Landfill Cover Policy (en español).
- NO liquids of any kind are accepted at the landfill.
- Businesses with special wastes should call (641) 683-0644 for assistance.
- Yard waste MUST go to the compost area of the Landfill – it is free of charge when it is residential. Yard waste in plastic garbage bags must be emptied out and the empty bags can be disposed of at the gate.
- Tires and appliances are not accepted at the Landfill and must be taken to the Recycling Center.
- NO toxic or hazardous materials are permitted at the Landfill and must be taken to the Recycling Center – please call (641) 683-0685 to schedule a time to bring toxic materials to the Recycling Center.
E-Waste
The landfill has a drop off area for E-waste. Items accepted are: computer towers, laptops, printers of all kinds, Li-on batteries (small quantities), motherboards, PCI Cards, Ram, CPUs, power supplies, power cords, hard drives, DVD players and VCRs.
Fees
The disposal charge for solid waste and construction and demolition debris is $61.00 per ton. The minimum charge is $15.50 for 500 pounds or less. Amounts greater than 500 pounds will be prorated at the $61.00 per ton rate.
Remember: The Landfill accepts limbs/branches and leaves/grass clippings from private residences free of charge. The loads MUST be tarped.
Also, the Landfill no longer accepts appliances – these items go to the Recycling Center.
